Breaking Ground Day!

The big day is finally here!

This afternoon the bushes and stumps will be pulled out of the garden bed at the top of the hill, making way for the pollinator garden to become a reality.  My mom really wanted this garden to happen and thanks to the help of a lot of people, it looks like we are ready to start.  Last Sunday at the church BBQ, Janet and I had a talk about possible plants and where everything will be placed in the bed.  She brought along a couple pots of native plants to give us an idea of size and the variety of leaves.  The bed faces south east and is perfect for attracting bees and butterflies.  Janet and Patrick were sure they saw Swallowtail butterfly while we were talking.  We hope that is only the beginning!

  1. I’m missing Jean at WMSC outings and lectures but her wonderful outlook on life continues to inspire. We can remember and celebrate her spirit with every beautiful spring flower we encounter.

  2. Anne, you are to be commended for carrying on with your Mom’s gardening wishes. In the year since Jean left us, I have thought of her often. A few years ago I took her for her first trip to the Brickworks for lunch. She purchased some “gardening items” in the shop “to encourage Anne” re gardening! Your beautiful descriptions of the plants tells me you love gardening as Jean did. You are a wonderful daughter whom she appreciated greatly.

    • Joan, I remember how thrilled she was about the Brickworks and sharing that experience with you over a delicious lunch. We went later to visit the gardening centre, and managed to bring home a staggering amount of specimens on the bus in my buggy. One of them was a milkweed we planted in the front garden. I thought it had died off, but I guess the roots survived the cold winter after all. The milkweed is growing beside the Joe Pie-weed which is producing more and more abundant blooms every year – the butterflies love it!.

      • Can only imagine how delighted Jean must be that you are carrying on with her garden. And you sound like you are enjoying it- she would be doubly pleased. Your efforts are truly a tribute to her memory.
